Internships are an ideal way for students to gain an appreciation for the real world of environmental economics policy and problem solving, whether it be at firms trying to comply with regulations, agencies trying to efficiently manage natural resources, governments constructing regulatory policies, or UN agencies trying to fashion treaties.
Students traditionally engage in a summer policy related internship during the first or second year of the program. Students are encouraged to pursue opportunities on their own in organizations where they might enjoy working. Students submit a proposal of their internship to the EES Director for review.
Faculty advisors may help students identify potential internships. Additionally, the Bren School Career Development Center has created a structured program for aiding students in their search for internships. Students can locate internship possibilities through the Bren School Career Development website: Environmental Internship Page.
Students can also receive internship announcements by signing up for the Bren School internship listserv. Students are able to access internship listings through a number of internship books and newsletters located in the Bren School Career Library and through the UCSB Counseling and Career Services Center.
Student internship sites have included non-profit agencies, local and foreign governments, think tanks and international institutes. Projects have included simulation modeling for species competition research undertaken by Resources for the Future; affordable housing policies and sustainability issues at the local South Coast Livable Communities (SCLC) and The Sustainability Project (TSP); economic benefits of crop diversification at a small-scale organic farm; environmental research and policy analysis for a state legislator chairing an Energy and Environmental Protection Committee; and environmental research at the World Bank.
Students completed international internships at the Institute of Environment and Resources in Taiwan, the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre, a Nepalese government organization, the International Water Management Institute, and the Jordanian Ministry of Water and Irrigation.
